Task

The company ANDREAS STIHL AG & Co. KG is one of the leading manufacturers of motor saws, motor scythes,
hedge shears etc. In order to meet the continuously rising requirements concerning logistics in future, STIHL assigned

Aberle Automation GmbH & Co. KG with planning and construction of a new flexible packing line. By means of this packing
line today new Stihl commercial-devices are assembled orderspecifically. “Confectioning” means adding operating
instructions, various labels, client specific tools and other accessories.

Integrated components
A new flow of material-/order control computer with interface to the Host SAP/R3 was designed as client-/server
system. The cross linking of the computer system with the single subsystems is carried out by an Ethernet
network. The communication was realized by bi-directional TCP/IP socket interfaces. For the fast overview of the
plant situation an Aberle 3D-visualization system was established. On the subordinate control level the newest
generation of the Siemens Simatic family S 7 was applied. The overall control communication was established by
Profibus-DP couplers.

Solution
The new packing line was constructed with two autarkic, fully automated packing bands and an automatic
Kuka–palletisation. The automatization realized by Aberle allows optimal
efficiency at dispatching to the two packing lines. Order specifically the control center staff has the opportunity
to adjust functions and control mode flexibly. Furthermore for both packing bands manual depaletting and paletting
was planned as an emergency strategy.

Advantages for the customers
The complete solution from Aberle today allows Stihl a substantially higher job processing per day. Thus the
constantly growing sales figures at Stihl are covered. The former requirements of personnel leasing at the
packing bands could be reduced by Aberles` sophisticated automation concept.
